cat not eating.. [Aug. 24th, 2010|11:36 pm]

so im starting to get a bit worried.. one of my cats hasnt really been eating lately, some days she will go for her wet food, and other days shes not interested. the snacks she used to LOVE (purebites dehydrated chicken) she turns her nose at. i dont really know what to do anymore.. she had been on raw, slowly she didnt want the raw anymore so i was mixing some grain free canned food along with it. she was vomiting yesterday, but nothing came up, i figured it was because i let my cats outside yesterday for a bit.. but she was vomiting again when i came home today. im thinking that since she isnt eating her food, she might be trying to find things around the house to eat when im not home.. causing her to puke. at least i really hope thats the case.
ive been working too much this week, but i have thursday off, im wondering if it warrants a vet visit, or if i should be trying a different food with her.. i dont want to put her on a kibble because my other cat will eat kibble until she pukes, and its just gross. im also really seeing the benefits to feeding raw to the one cat that is loving it (she started out not liking it, while the one that has been not eating was the one that initially LOVED the raw.)

UPDATE-------------------------------------------------------------------------

the vet appt was at 10:15am.. he took blood, gave her fluids, antibiotic, appetite stimulant and something to bring her fever down.. he did say she was a bit jaundice but between that and not eating could be from a list of factors. he said other than dehydrated and losing 2lbs since april, she looks ok, her stomach felt ok.. he couldnt see anything that could be the problem.. so now we wait for results. shes rolling around on the floor like her usual cute self and walking over to her food dish - but im not to attempt feeding until about 7pm
*fingers crossed*

Poor kitten. *snuggles*

Have you tried a new flavour. I know people say cats like the same food over and over again, but mine don't. They get bored with one flavour and will stop eating it and digg in again when I change say from fish to chicken. Same goes for their noms.

The other question would be: hairball?

Is she drinking alright? TBH if she is not eating normally again in the next two three days I would take her to the vet.

i did see her drinking a few times. so shes getting water.. i was thinking maybe hairball since nothing really comes out when she pukes.. or maybe constipation? its hard to tell on that front since i have another cat.. and im not home a lot lately due to work.. but she usually goes between chicken and fish, but shes NEVER had a problem in the last 2 years that ive had her with flavour.. like she always would chow down, she did have a tendency to like the chicken flavour over the fish, and i have been going back and forth with the food i had.. i might grab something else and see how that goes.. but i tried to play with her last night and she wasnt very playful. that worries me. shes always ready to play.

Poor kitten. Good luck with the new food.

If she is not eating at all, I am with the other comment i.e. vet asap.

I think a vet visit is needed right away. My cat stopped eating back in July. Come to find out he has Pancreatitis. I have been doing Subq fluids at home and he is on several medications for it. If she is not eating and is vomiting, she needs to see a vet.

If she goes too long not getting enough food, she might end with fatty liver.

I dont mean to scare ya, but I have come to learn that if a cat goes more than a day without food, it can be deadly.

thats what worries me. she always ends up eating at least a little bit in a day, but its half of what she used to eat.. shes never really eaten a whole lot at meal time.. but im also scared since she has no interest in playing. thats unusual for her.

When my kitty was dying of kidney failure, my vet told me she needed to be eating at least 5 ounces of canned food a day. If you can't say for certain that your cat is getting at least that much (or comparable amount for dry food), she needs to be seen right away. And with her lack of interest in playing, I'd get her seen ASAP.

I vote for Vet too. Better safe than sorry, and for a cat to be showing signs of illness means the cat's likely really ill.... they usually hide it.

But the question I have: Has it been unusually hot there?

no, it was pretty humid, but there have been worse days. i also have a/c. i know that sometimes pets can stop eating when the weather changes, and initially thats what i thought was happening which is why i didnt think it was serious.. but she was still eating, just not as much as usual.

I vote for vet now, too... My cat stopped eating & is recovering from Hepatic Lipidosis (fatty liver). It can happen quickly. If she will eat the kibble, give it to her! If a cat is eating crappy cat food, it's better than none. and you don't want fatty liver....! the treatment is FOOD, CALORIES, so if their liver is sick, they get nauseous & won't eat at all, so getting food into them becomes a serious issue. Has to be done via orally syringing it, or syringing it into a feeding tube. it has taken over my life.

lots of things can stop a cat from eating in the first place (stress, simple cold affecting sense of smell, pancreatis, lots of things) , so if you can catch that & cure it before hepatic lipidosis starts up, you win... In fact, if I knew what I know now? I'd syringe food into her immediately.

not full of urine, or poop?
she could be constipated. lots of kitties will avoid the box if it was painful on their last trip. my cat also vomited when she couldn't poop. Keep a close eye on her & if you feel it's time to go to the e-vet, go. Only you can see her, ya know? Not hiding is good, but then I don't know her habits.

Do you have a plastic syringe in the house? if so, mash some wet & get it into her. can you try finger feeding her? it can make all the difference. so hard to advise, because this could be anything. could even be her teeth.

fingers crossed. please update. I am thinking you are catching this in time. I have a multi-cat household & noticed too late.

its been almost 24hrs since she ate last and it was only a couple bites of canned tuna. it was the only thing she was interested in. i do have a syringe from the last time she went to the vet (thankfully) im just scared that if she has a blockage/constipation that force feeding her would be not so great.. unless its pumpkin puree.. i also thought about her teeth, since she had 2 teeth extracted last time she went to the vet and the tooth that i took her in for wasnt the one they pulled.. so theres still an issue with that tooth and im thinking that might be the problem too.. but the litterbox looks to only have poop from one cat. it smells like theres urine.. but its hard because i went from having 2 boxes to 1.. and they both use the 1 box now.

and try warming up some wet food, offer tuna, something stinky if her nose is stuffed.

im thinking i should go try to find pumpkin puree, it wont be harmful if its not constipation, but if it is, it might help?

it won't hurt & would help constipation, but if she only had a nibble in 24 hours I'd take her into the e-vet. to be honest, if it goes into FHL, it's going to SUCK.

i am going out, but please update!

thank you!!! she ate!!! i put out about 2tbsp of her wet food, and she ate about half of it in about 4-5 different sittings.. not all at once.. so thats a good sign, shes also coming over to me if i call her, but she keeps hiding under the couch.

it IS a good sign! Hiding MIGHT be because she hated going to the vet & got stressed, but it can also mean that she's ill. Just make sure that she's getting enough food into her while you wait for results. if she goes off the food again, wrap her butt up like a burrito in a towel & syringe it into her! Wellness chicken is extremely easy to syringe feed... Mash with potato masher & it draw into the syringe w/ ease... As someone mentioned, a rough guide is that she needs to get a 5oz can into her a day. I'd be aiming for 3/4 of a can, no less! How much does she weigh?

she LOVES wellness core! thats what shes been on for the last while, i rotate between the fish and the chicken.. since she started eating again, im sticking to the chicken flavour. she lost 2lbs since the last time she was at the vet (april) so shes at 10lbs now. shes going at food with gusto now which is fantastic! when i just got home, she was waiting at the door for me like usual (the last few days she was too lethargic!) and she was rubbing up on my legs/purring super loud like the motor boat she is! - its been a long time since shes greeted me this way, i cant believe i didnt notice, but its been a while.. normally she ALWAYS does that. !!
her lips are still a little yellow, although towards the middle closest to her gums they are getting pink again, and she doesnt feel as bloated as she was yesterday which makes me think she used her litter box at some point today. at least i hope!

you know i dont even know how much shes been eating, i opened a can yesterday though and by this morning i finished it, so she ate at least half a can between last night and this morning, and just now i fed her half the can (she ate most)

let me know what the vet says. I'm interested!

oh yeah, so they were supposed to call me last night or this morning and didnt! at least they said they were going to call!! - by the time i was done work they were closed, so im gonna call tomorrow morning! he said it could be caused by a number of things, but its most likely something she ate, like something stupid from outside or from getting into something she shouldnt have at home (i do let my cats into the backyard when im home since they just want to hang in the sun - and since shes never really been a big eater, if she doesnt eat enough or gets really hungry she will gnaw on strange things like doll hair or claw at the wall..) its just so hard with one cat that wants to eat and eat even if shes not hungry, and one cat that is a grazer. i couldnt free feed kibble because the other one would eat ALL of it no matter how much i put out and then would puke it all up.

shes being so cute though, shes purring when i touch her, which is something she wasnt doing either before. this makes me so very happy :)

he did call me, he said there was nothing wrong. everything came back normal, except whatever had to do with her liver, but he said that was to be expected since she wasnt eating. so.. he doesnt know what caused it, but he wants me to go back in tues.. i have wed off.. but im also broke now from taking her to the vet.. my next pay is supposed to cover rent because of it.. and i dont know what to do. shes eating again, still resting, but she is purring LOTS. she comes over to me, and meows when i come home (because she wants to eat!) every day it seems her lips are returning to a better colour too.. still looks like no litter box business happened.. but the vet said it could take a few days.

So the bilirubin is high & he wasn't able to offer more?
can you apply for carecredit to help your cat out?
here's the thing... liver issues aren't good. it can be cancers, it can be HL & other things. Generally they look at the liver via ultrasound & it's pricey, but it's telling. I had a cat pass with cancer attacking the liver, and I have the HL kitty. both were diagnosed after bloodwork/ultrasound combo. i know what it's like to be broke & have sick cats, and just want you to have a heads up on this.

if she continues to take in calories, HL probably isn't an issue, just keep that gal eating, but I'd question your vet in detail.

oh yeah, i gave my cat 10ml of white, live cultured, unsweetened/unflavored probiotic yogurt & it worked a treat on her BMs! Try it out. My cat hated the pumpkin, so I needed to offer a new solution.

she seems to be eating at least half the 5.5 oz can a day. its really hard getting her to eat sometimes. her appetite seems to be what it was before, her eating about a teaspoons worth and then getting up and wandering away from the plate. so what ive been doing is, placing the food on my computer desk, propping her down beside it and she ends up nibbling away at it slowly.. but she still wont finish all of it.
my sister said she will help me out with the next vet visit.. but i will talk to him on the phone first if i can.. or instead.. he didnt say anything about doing ultrasounds.. he said from feeling her, she didnt feel swollen or anything.. so i think he just wants to dose her again so that whatever it was stays out of her system.. which is understandable.

Keep your questions to your vet revolving around the liver... Why is that liver creating levels that made her jaundiced? Can you borrow a baby scale from anyone? If she's losing weight on the amount of food she's getting, you're going to head in bad territory, ie HL. If she's maintaining her weight, that's not an issue. It doesn't sound like your vet is explaining things correctly to you. I hate to sound pushy, but all vets are NOT created equal. Some are great, some suck. Make him explain things thoroughly! Nothing being swollen isn't a great diagnosis, ya know?

Do you know what he dosed her with & what it was for?

he did explain things thoroughly, i dont have a good memory, so i cannot tell you what he told me word for word. he was way more detailed when he called me saturday as well, he kept stressing that she needs to eat as much as possible.. and to give her whatever she will eat. ive been sitting with her and getting her to eat, she seems to really go at food if i pick it off the plate and put small chunks in front of her.. her weight was maintained before all of this happened, and she was not a big eater.

right. Look, I'm just trying to help, because I know first hand what happens here. If he's stressing that she needs to eat as much as possible + jaundice, I'm saying that these things = HL-- which is totally fatal if unchecked, yet totally reversible if you can put the time in. You should write it down when you speak to him, because it sounds like he's concerned that she's heading there, or already is there. I'd personally wrap her up & syringe feed her to supplement the calories.

I'll quit harping on you.

no, no, i understand completely where you are coming from. shes back to eating the same amount she used to eat if not more. i figured out if i put small chunks of food near her paws, she eats them. therefore shes been eating almost the whole can a day - not quite, but more than half now. her lips are back to their normal colour today (yay) and her poops look normal. shes playing and being her normal self, she hasnt gone to hide in a few days either. i will most definitely call the vet tomorrow and see if i can talk to him on the phone again and ask him all questions, if he wants me to bring her in again, i most definitely will do that as well.

thank you for all your help and support through this :) i really do appreciate it.
